This guidebook was born simply of a desire to visit and explore the Channel Islands. Cicerone were interested when approached and promptly produced a contract.

The idea was to visit Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and check a variety of walking routes. The Channel Islands have excellent coastal walks and quite a few lesser known walks inland. They also have an immense number of visitor attractions. Most short walks could include two or three of these attractions, so walkers need plenty of extra time to look at interesting things along the way.

By the time a whole month of route research was completed, a total of 47 short walks had been checked, spread all around the island group. In fact, there was even a spare day left over at the end for a quick trip to St. Malo in France!

The amazing history and heritage of the Channel Islands, intensely bound up with politics and warfare, makes it an exceedingly interesting place for historians to study, but there is also an interesting and bewildering range of flora and bird-life. It is surprising how much is packed into these small islands, and how long you need to be able to explore them properly.

Travelling around Jersey and Guersey involved using an excellent system of buses, while ferries led to Sark and Herm and the famous little yellow plane 'Joey' was used to fly to Alderney.

(This guidebook is now out of print. There are now two separate titles covering the islands - Walking on Jersey and Walking on Guernsey - with all the routes completely re-walked, updated in full colour, with new mapping and photographs.)
